Description

Swaged Rebar Couplers provide a full-strength mechanical splice by cold-forging a seamless steel sleeve directly onto ribbed reinforcement steel. Using a portable hydraulic swaging press, the steel sleeve deforms plastically into the rebar ribs, creating a mechanical interlock that exceeds the ultimate tensile strength of the parent bar.

This system eliminates field threading, bar-end heating, and cross-sectional area reduction. It connects standard deformed rebar (#4 to #18 / 12mm to 57mm) in high-seismic, high-fatigue, and congested concrete structures where traditional lap splices cause steel congestion or fail code clearance limits.

Key Product Characteristics

Zero Threading Required: Joins shear-cut or flame-cut rebar directly without thread cutting, cold-upsetting, or taper machining.

Full Mechanical Interlock: Cold radial deformation forces sleeve steel into rebar deformations, eliminating slip under load cycles.

100% Bar Break Assurance: Splice design capacity exceeds the actual ultimate tensile strength (fu) of Grade 60, Grade 75, and Grade 80 rebar.

Compact Outer Diameter: Sleek sleeve profile reduces rebar cage congestion, enabling smooth concrete placement and aggregate flow.

Visual Inspection Capability: Complete cold-swaging causes measurable outer diameter reduction and sleeve elongation, allowing instant gauge verification on site.

Grades & Standards

Our swaged couplers comply with international structural design codes for Type 1 and Type 2 mechanical splices:

ACI 318-19 / ACI 349 / ACI 359: Meets Type 1 (125% fy) and Type 2 (100% fu specification) mechanical splice requirements.

BS EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2): Complies with static, dynamic, and low-cycle fatigue load criteria for reinforcement connections.

AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications: Approved for main tension ties and seismic plastic hinge zones in bridge piers.

ISO 15835-1 / 2: Class B1/S1 performance certification under static, slip, and cyclic tension-compression testing.

ASTM A706 / A615: Compatible with Low-Alloy Billet Steel and Carbon-Steel Deformed Bars.

Applications

Bridge Substructures & Piles: Splicing vertical rebar cages in bored piles, diaphragm walls, and bridge piers where cage stiffness is critical during hoisting.

Nuclear & Containment Buildings: Heavy reinforcement splices subjected to impact, blast resistance, and thermal stress requirements under ACI 349.

High-Rise Core Walls & Columns: Splicing large-diameter rebar (#11 to #18) to replace long lap splices, reducing steel weight and concrete void risks.

Precast Concrete Connections: Splicing starter bars protruding from precast elements in field closure pours and beam-column joints.

Infrastructure Retrofit & Repair: Connecting new reinforcement to exposed existing rebar in bridge widening, dam repair, and structural upgrades.

Installation

Step 1: Rebar End Preparation
Ensure rebar ends are free of loose rust, oil, concrete slurry, or extreme bent tips. Flame-cut or shear-cut ends are acceptable; flat facing is unneeded.

Step 2: Marking & Positioning
Mark the required embedment depth (half the coupler length) on both rebar ends using chalk or paint markers. Slide the swaged sleeve completely onto the first bar up to the center stop mark.

Step 3: Hydraulic Cold Swaging
Align the second bar into the sleeve. Position the portable hydraulic swaging press over the sleeve. Apply radial hydraulic pressure sequentially from the center toward both outer edges until the press die closes fully.

Step 4: Quality Verification
Inspect the swaged connection using a passed/failed GO/NO-GO caliper on the outer swaged diameter. Check that the rebar alignment remains within 1.5 degrees tolerance.

Quality & Testing

Every production batch undergoes destructive and non-destructive quality controls prior to shipment:

Tensile & Elongation Testing: Pull testing to destruction (ASTM A370) ensuring bar rupture occurs outside the coupler sleeve zone.

Cyclic Tension-Compression Test: High-stress low-cycle testing (20 cycles from 0.5 fy to 1.25 fy) to verify performance under dynamic seismic loading.

Low-Slip Verification: Electronic extensometer measurements to ensure slip remains strictly under 0.10 mm.

Metallurgical Analysis: Chemical composition verification (spectrometry) and hardness testing on raw steel tubing to prevent brittle fracture under cold deformation.

Nondestructive Testing (NDT): Magnetic particle testing (MT) on forged sleeves to verify 100% surface integrity without micro-cracks.

Project Code Requirements: Specific design standards required (ACI 318 Type 1/2, Eurocode 2, AASHTO, Caltrans).

Quantity & Delivery Schedule: Total piece count per size and required delivery batches.

Surface Coating: Plain, galvanized, epoxy-coated, or specialized anti-corrosion finish.

Equipment Requirements: Indicate whether hydraulic swaging presses and die sets are needed for site execution or if pre-swaging shop equipment is required.

FAQ

Q: How does a swaged coupler differ from a parallel threaded coupler?

A: Swaged couplers require no bar-end threading or upsetting. A hydraulic press deforms the sleeve onto raw rebar ribs on-site, saving off-site machining labor and working on crooked or sheared bar ends.

Q: Can swaged couplers be used in high-seismic zones?

A: Yes. Our swaged couplers satisfy ACI 318 Type 2 and ISO 15835 S1 requirements, delivering full tensile and compressive capacity exceeding 100% of the bar's specified ultimate strength (fu) under dynamic strain.

Q: Is site equipment required for installation?

A: Yes. Installation requires a portable hydraulic swaging machine equipped with die sets matching your target bar diameters. We supply equipment for sales or lease along with coupler orders.

Q: Can we splice two bars of different diameters?

A: Yes. We manufacture transition swaged couplers designed with stepped internal bores to join adjacent rebar sizes without requiring extra adaptor plates.

Q: How do field inspectors verify proper swaging quality?

A: Inspectors use a dedicated GO/NO-GO ring gauge to measure the sleeve's reduced outer diameter post-swaging. Correct outer diameter reduction indicates total steel-to-rib mechanical interlock.

Q: Are swaged couplers compatible with epoxy-coated rebar?

A: Yes. We supply swaged couplers configured for coated rebar, though die pressures may be adjusted slightly to compensate for coating thickness while ensuring compliance with ACI slip criteria.
